Master Listening Comprehension: 4 Proven Steps with a Twist

Do you struggle to understand what people are saying, especially in English? If so, you're not alone. Listening comprehension is a skill that takes time and practice to develop.

In this video, I'm going to share with you 4 tips on how to improve your listening comprehension, including the most important one.

Tips:

1 Find something that you want to listen to that is not too difficult for you. Keep it short.

2 Listen to it and read the captions or read the transcript at the same time.

3 Listen to it without the transcript, without any captions, without any text. So just listening.

4 Practice your pronunciation as you're listening. Say the words and phrases that are new to you.

Why is it important to practice pronunciation?

 • If you cannot say it, you cannot hear it.

 • Listening and speaking work together.

 • Practicing pronunciation makes learning active.

I hope these tips help you to improve your listening comprehension!

Here is a transcript of the video to help you follow along:

What do you think the number one question I get is? The number one question I get is, 'How do I get better at listening?' I'm going to give you four things to do to improve your listening comprehension.

And the fourth one is the key, okay? The fourth one is going to blow your mind. Number one, find something that you want to listen to that is not too difficult for you. Keep it short. Number two, listen to it and read the captions or read the transcript at the same time.

This you're going to repeat a couple of times, okay? That's why I said keep it short so it doesn't become too time-consuming. Number three, listen to it without the transcript, without any captions, without any text.

So just listening. Number four, okay? The key, the most important part. As you're listening, you have to practice your pronunciation too. You have to practice saying the words that are new to you, saying the phrases that are new to you.

Why is it important to practice pronunciation? Two reasons. Firstly, if you cannot say it, it means that you're not hearing it. If you cannot hear it, you cannot say it. The listening and the speaking work together.

It's symbiotic. Secondly, practicing the pronunciation means you're taking part. It's now an active learning exercise. You're not just passively absorbing the material. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching.
