Idiom: ON THE FLY - English Vocabulary #shorts

Image
What happens if you do something on the fly? To do something on the fly is an idiomatic expression that means to do something quickly, spontaneously, without any preparation. So the meaning is similar to the expressions "to wing it" or "to play it by ear," which I've covered in a couple of previous videos. Here are some examples to illustrate: • I didn't have time to prepare a speech, so I had to do it on the fly. • During the interview, she faced some tough questions which she answered on the fly. • The project faced unexpected challenges, but we were able to find solutions on the fly. • I can't answer anything on the fly. I have to know what they're wondering before it happens. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching. What does it mean if you "wing it"? If someone "wings it", that means they do something without preparing, without planning, without practicing. It has a very similar meaning to the phrase "play it by ear," which I made a video about a few days ago. Here are a few examples to illustrate: • I didn't have time to prepare for the presentation, so I had to "wing it". • During the interview, she had to "wing it" when they asked her an unexpected question about her experience. • Can you share with me your secret to good parenting? I would say you just have to "wing it". • The chef ran out of one essential ingredient, so she had to "wing it" and substitute something else in the recipe. So there you go, the informal idiomatic phrase "to wing it". I hope that helps. Thanks for watching.
